What is semiotics?
The shortest definition is that it is the study of signs.The word 'semiotics' comes from the Greek word semeion meaning 'sign'.In a semiotic sense, signs take the form of words, images, sounds, gestures and objects. The study of signs is revealing as the ways in which signs are used, accepted and rejected.
A text, within literary theory, is a coherent set of symbols that transmits some kind of informative message.In context of semiotics a 'text' (such as a printed advertisement, an animated cartoon or a radio news bulletin) is in itself a complex sign containing other signs

In the old days, the image would have been interpreted semiotically as a swimmer's head and two arms waving for help and it seems just like a regular sign which telling people to call for help but nowdays initialisms are created through text message communication which lol means laughing out loud, or laugh out loud.Because of the simple text created by people today,this sign just look like a comment that suggests people should "laugh out loud" at the sight of a drowning person.
For me,i myself have see a lot of signs using text until today and sometime used it too through text communication like after write something nice or to express my feeling for example,i ending it with text symbol like this "(^.^) " which it show the sign that i'm happy .

Semiotics or the study of signs/texts can also defined as "something that stands for something, to someone in some capacity". I personally think that from the image example given, semiotics is a powerful form of communication especially for worldwide understanding of a specific thing. Everyone can interpret the meaning if signs are shown clearly in a common and simple way but, it can also be misinterpreted with different meanings.

this shows that people really cannot life without sign or semiotics.
As mention above,all people know that semiotic is the study of sign. semiotic is also easier for people to understand things just by using the symbols without telling. I agree with White Detective about nowadays,people keep using sign in their daily life. In addition,many tools use symbols and it is not for adults only but children too.
ReplyDeleteMedia and text are one thing. We can't separate them because media always comes with text and vice versa. From media, the understanding of people came from the text that they read. People will never or slightly do not get to the same point which a person(the creator) wants others to have the meaning the same way as him/hers. For instance the signage above, people tend to take different meanings according to the time frame when the media was put up. 'LOL' is a text that commonly used nowadays compared to the past. Therefore, there will be a different approach from each of the people. Only the 'creator' knows the actual meaning of it. On the other side, people will eventually have another meaning IF there is no text provided. People maybe will take that as a sign which intended to warn people that the place often occurred such case of people drowning.
ReplyDeleteI agree with edavivier, which she said media and text are one thing and can't separate them because media always comes with text and vice versa. Text can explain everything what we want to convey to other people but media people may misinterpret it and doesn't get the actual meaning of the media. But a good media, even without text people can understand the meaning of the media.Image above are bad example usage of sign,it may can lead to negative ways. In our daily life we also use sign to show what we feel when we were chatting or messaging with other.When happy people use sign ( ^^ , :) ,:D ).When sad ( :( , T__T , :(( ) when shock ( :O ).
