the ICON, the INDEX and the SYMBOL.

Signs work in different ways as well as on different levels. A sign can be defined as a lettered or patterned board that gave meaning, command, or directions. There are 3 kinds of sign which is the icon, the index and the symbol.

Icon

An icon is closely related to the things they represents, the meaning is physically resembles what it `stands for'.

Everyone knows that when they see this icon they must alert when train crossing ahead

Index
An index is a sign that directly points to the message or instruction.
Anything that focuses the attention is an indexical sign.

This is an index sign, giving direction and information.

Symbol
A symbol does not have direct connection to what it represents. The meaning usually needs to be learned through association.

Symbol of Breast Cancer Awareness
This image of ribbon is a symbolize various concerns depending on the colours or the patterns used. For example, black ribbons may be used for mourning.Red ribbon is a symbol for both drug prevention and for the fight against AIDS.Without cultural knowledge, someone might just see this image just a ribbon.

In conclusion, signs have a meaning and some semantic content that is implied or `brought to mind'

  1. From my point of view, signs can work in many different ways and levels. There are signs, which relates to objects they represent. These are called ICONS as mentioned above in the post. Another sign that is called INDEX, are signs that are related to the object it represents but not directly, which in the post stated, it only directs to the message or instruction rather than the image. Lastly, SYMBOL is signs that don’t have any link at all with the thing it represents. All three of these signs are important which acts as simplified messages and it really helps when people see signs anywhere and are able to understand the meaning itself just by looking at it. Signs are very powerful content for all of us.

  2. in my opinion signs can be translate in many different way and it also have different types that stands for different meaning.
one of them are called ICON. it is always used for the religious work of art. this term is used in a very big scale of context for an image, picture and anything that can be related to art.
INDEX is stand for a system that always be used to makes the information easier to be find by people.
lastly, SYMBOL is something that represents some piece of information. it always can be found on a map. we can see a symbol of tent, road and many other things in it. for individu, the symbol that represent them is their personal name.

  3. As created by Peirce, icon, index and symbol are the main tools of semiotic studies. As for me icon is a directly and physically influenced by the object. Paintings and photographs are usually taken as icons as they resemble their objects. Peirce had subcategorized icon into three which are image, metaphor and diagram. Image contains object, metaphor represents a character of an object which has the same characteristic to something else and diagram is a relationship of objects.

Index in my opinion is connected by two things or more which people can interpret a meaning but it usually has nothing to do with the connection. Index is always a point, reference, or suggest something else out of its object.

And lastly symbol, usually relied on some meanings. Same symbol but different meanings may be approached by different people. Symbol can also be said as a code. People may use a specific symbol or code to represent some meaning to others and not everyone will understand that specific code. Languages are the most relevant to symbol. Alphanumeric characters on the keyboard are also can be specified as symbols. Simply put symbols are not signs without a 'reader'.

  4. In my opinion, Index are more understandable because it more give direct meaning with both typography and visual image.

Icon are represent what are the thing is. It more likely to simplify the actual object which is more complex to a simple visual yet people still can understand it.

I agree with edavivier explanation about symbols. Different people might interpret the symbol with different meaning and not everyone can understand what we want to convey about the symbol.

  5. Icon,Index and Symbol, this three signs are easy to understand. They also have same definition which is represent
sign. But, every one of them has their own interpretation but they still in one roof which is make people life easier. Signs
is very easy for people to understand something without read it but only watch it and understand. Mostly, people prefer
something that straight to the point rather than make allusions. Imagine what if Signs doesn't exist in this world, only alphabet.
For example,if you go to the shopping mall, you want to park your car,if there is no signs to explain the parking deserve for handicap, just
words and phrases,it might took few minutes to you to read it. If there was a signs, you don't have to waste your time because once your eyes look at the sign,
automatically your brain detect the meaning of the sign. The conclusion is Signs which is Icon,Symbol and Index just have similarity and it makes our daily life easier and much better.
